Assessment of genetic diversity and population structure in livestock using genomic data
Course description: This two-day course will introduce the assessment of genetic diversity in livestock populations using genomic information, combining foundational theory with hands-on data analyses. Participants will learn how to use high-density SNP data to quantify and interpret key diversity metrics, including linkage disequilibrium, population structure, admixture, effective population size, genomic inbreeding, and runs of homozygosity. The course will also cover approaches for detecting signatures of selection, with an emphasis on their biological interpretation and practical relevance. Through guided exercises using commonly adopted software tools, participants will gain experience in analyzing real genomic datasets and integrating results into breeding and conservation strategies. This course is designed for graduate students, early career researchers, and industry professionals seeking to apply genomic tools to improve sustainability, resilience, and genetic management of livestock populations.
